Blog Help???

Okay, I am trying to set up a system for my reviews.  Alot of sites use hearts, tombstones and coffee cups.  I was thinking of diamonds or clovers/shamrock or maybe a small angel or fairy.  maybe roses/daisies or a owl even...   It is a booky theme on my page so I would like it to go with it but I don't think 4 out of 5 A's sound right or even apples (thinking of a school teacher for some reason on that one, lol)

Here are a few more we are thinking about... (girls) goats, unicorns, wands, dragons, fangs, swords, frogs, crosses, books (magical books) or gems a opal, ruby, diamond, sapphire, turquoise(?) etc...  there are more but I will spare you lol

I also am going to come up with a link that you can use so that when you want to link your page to my review, the graphic will always show up.  Any suggestions???  I like my book theme but I would like something original and that will stand out and be noticed.  Thank you for helping...

  1. What about eye-glasses? They could look like the half-lenses on reading glasses or be perfectly round like the Harry Potter glasses, but books, reading, glasses come to mind.

  3. I would much rather read a thoughtful review that explores what the reviewer did and didn't like about a book than rely on symbols that are so subjective they're really meaningless. All apples or oranges or unicorns tell me is how much someone liked a book--and even then, one person's three is another person's five.

So many reviews are little more than a synopsis of the book followed by a paragraph or two that boils down to "I liked/hated this book" Little pictures don't really help me, either as author or publisher, understand what it was that prompted that reaction.

  4. I think you've got a great start here Brandy! Keep going, maybe a blog hop linky for other review sites to join. Readers would know it was for more review sites they could hop to right from your page! Good luck!

  5. I love the idea of dragons, but I also love the idea of using gemstones. If you used gemstones, you could rate them according to the value of the stone. For example, a book you disliked and would receive a 1 out of 5 on another site, would get an opal. If you loved it and would have given it 5 out of 5, then they get a diamond. You see what I'm saying? Color code with gemstones rather than the numbering system. I did like your "book" suggestion too, one where it's got magic spewing out of it because that could mean a host of different things...like reading itself is magical.

These are just suggestions. I'll keep giving this some thought and get back with you.

  6. How are you looking at this? Are you talking levels of "spice" like some of the romance novel review sites use or just an "I give this 5 _x_ out of 5 for being excellent"?

  7. Those are great ideas. What if you changed the symbol for every upcoming holiday? I don't think anyone has done that. -laur

  11. Thank you Liz. I understand what you are saying. I was just trying to spice it up alittle. I tend to do my reviews in the way that you don't like... so can you tell me what it is you look for in a review...

    Thanks for the imput...

  14. Hi Gracen thank you for stoping by. I like the dragons and gems aswell. The # of dragons could be the spice level and I could do 5 gems and each gem could be a 1 to 5 so instead of all diamonds a one could be a turquoise then if it a 2 turquoise and a opal and for 3 a turquoise opal and a sapphire and sooo on. I will have to make a legend for what everything means and come up with graphics.... Anyone know where I can do that at???

  17. Andrea thanks for stopping by. I really like it as well. Maybe a different symbol for each genre.. paranormal- fangs, scifi- alien, western- cowboy hat, contemps- lipstick etcccc...

Let me know what you think...

  18. I really like that last idea: different symbols for the different genres...I've never seen that on any other review blog. A thermometer could be used to show heat level, with the number of symbols indicating not only how high of a rating you give it, but what it's genre is. Good thinking!
